Majanicho, El Hierro, Lobos
North Shore surf photos
Volcanic reefs, winter swells, heavy water.
The dirt track between Corralejo and El Cotillo runs past some of the best reef breaks in the Canary Islands. This is where Fuerteventura gets serious.
The spot
The North Shore is a string of reef breaks over volcanic rock. Majanicho, a tiny fishing village halfway along the track, has waves for different levels inside its bay. El Hierro is a powerful, shallow wave for experienced surfers. Off the coast, the island of Lobos has a long right-hand point break that comes alive on big swells.
When it works
Autumn and winter, when the North Atlantic sends north and north-west swells. Southerly winds are offshore here. Mornings are usually cleaner, before the trade winds pick up.
Shooting here
The reefs break close to the rocks, so I can shoot from the shore with a long lens and get tight, powerful frames: the drop, the bottom turn, the barrel. Wear booties: the reef is sharp and shallow.

Ready when the swell is. Tell me your dates.
Message me with your dates and level. I’ll come back with the best spot and time.
